| LA adjourned for the day, Sharik denied entry into house | | | ....pg 5... NC members protest Sharik’s suspension
SRINAGAR, AUGUST, 03: Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAS) from the opposition National Conference staged a protest at the floor of the house on Thursday against the suspension of senior NC legislator, Shariefudin Sharik, from the house. Protest registered by the NC members first made Speaker adjourn the house. However when house met again after one hour NC legislators carried on with their protest, which made the speaker adjourn the house for the day. As soon as the assembly session started on Thursday, NC members stood up from their seats, raising slogans against the government. NC members were demanding, suspension of Sharik be revoked and he (Sharik) be allowed to attend the assembly session. Speaker of the legislative assembly, Tara Chand, tried pacifying the NC legislators, however, they continued with their protest, speaker announced the first adjournment of the house. Shariefudin Sharik, was not allowed inside the assembly complex and he staged a sit-in-dharna, near the main gate of the assembly complex. He was carrying a placard, which said, “I am being punished for raising my voice against those, who are ‘looting’ the state exchequer. I have raised my voice against those people, who are politically ‘corrupt’ My conscience won’t allow me to be a party to such a bill, which is meant for ‘looting’ the common people.” After Speaker adjourned the house, NC members came out, near the gate of the assembly complex to express their solidarity with Shariefudin- Sharik and staged a sit-in-dharna before the assembly gate. Senior National Conference leader, Ali Mohammad Sagar termed the suspension of Sharik from the house and he (Sharik) not being allowed inside the assembly complex as a ‘blot’ on democracy and insult of those people, who have sent him to assembly. “Sharik had raised genuine objection over the bill of office of profit. He (Sharik) had conveyed his objections in writing to the speaker, before the bill could be tabled in the legislative assembly. When bill of office of profit was put before assembly on Wednesday, Sharik sought an explanation from the speaker about his objections about the bill.” Sagar added, “ however, members of the ruling party opposed Sharik and heated exchange broke out between him (Sharik) and the members of the ruling party. They (members) of the ruling party are the ones, who started the trouble and interrupted the proceedings of the house. However, speaker did not take action against the members of the ruling party, rather he suspended a NC legislator.” Leader of the opposition and the senior NC leader, Abdul Raheem Rather said, “It is astounding that Sharik was suspended from the house without any warning. According the section 411 of Jammu and Kashmir constitution, speaker cannot suspend a legislator without warning him.” Members assembled in the house once again after the adjournment around 1145 hours. However, NC legislators continued with their protest, speaker asked them to sit down and take their seats, however, NC legislators insisted that the suspension of Sharik be revoked, as NC leaders continued with their protest, speaker adjourned the house for the day.
