| 17 RR evacuates 5000 Machail yatris | | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Kishtwar, Aug 16: While troops of 17 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) posted in Kishtwar are busy in handling the law and order situation in Kishtwar in wake of communal violence, they have done a commendable job in evacuation of over 5000 Machail yatra pilgrims in last three days. As per the details, 17 RR during intervening night of August 10 and 11 evacuated 3318 yatris and boarded them in 221 vehicles from Gulabgard to Dool and finally shifted them out of Kishtwar by providing them security cover up to safe area. On next day troops of 17 RR evacuated 971 yatries boarded in 124 vehicles and on third day 772 yatries were boarded in 64 vehicles and evacuated. In three days army cleared 5061 yatries from Gulabgard base camp up to safer places. During the shifting of yatries, 17 RR also arranged for food for these yatries who were trapped at Gulabgard and other places. The army also organized special medical camp for the yatries and also helped drivers for arranging fuel for their vehicles who had stranded on Padder-Kishtwar road due to non availability of the petrol as the main petrol pump was burnt down by the rioters during Eid violence. All the yatries express his gratitude towards army and particularly towards 17 RR and its troops. As per army sources, 50-70 Machail yatries are still at Machail village and many among them were having air tickets and once the weather gets clear, they will be airlifted and later will be escorted out of the trouble area. Army is also arranging ponies for few elderly people, but the bad weather is hampering the shifting of them since last four days as entire Kishtwar District witnessed heavy rains. |
