FOUR LANING OF THE JAMMU SRINAGAR NATIONAL HIGHWAY: ROAD BLOCKS MAY DELAY AMBITIOUS PROJECT
3/9/2007 11:24:54 PM
Jammu | March 9
Despite receiving central nod for the ambitious project linked with four laning of the 300 km long Jammu-Srinagar national Highway, the state cabinet is sitting over the clearance and so far has awarded approval to only one phase out of 13 phases, official sources said here.
The sources said that the cabinet approval was received by the executing authorities only in case of four laning of 22 km road stretch between Udhampur and Banihal when the case for cabinet approval had been submitted to the state Government regarding other phases which related to permission for carrying out cutting of trees.
The work has been delayed because even clearance from the Department of Forests and Environment had not been received.
The Minister for Roads and Buildings, G S Charak, said that the work on the mega project of four-laning of 265 km highway was expected to be taken in hand in June,2007.
Government authorities said that seven leg work out of 13 is expected to cost over Rs.1857 crores. In various phases even the tree counting, mandatory for carrying out felling for road widening after clearance from the Department of Forests, has not been completed. And where the counting has been completed the clearance from the Forest Department is yet awaited after which the projects will be submitted to the state cabinet for sanction.
It may be mentioned that the Government of India had approved the widening of the existing 2-lane road to 4-lane from Pathankot to Srinagar under the National Highways Development Project (NHDP) Phase II as part of the North-South Corridor. The total length of highways under the NHDP Phase II in Jammu and Kashmir is about 437 km.
Out of this, work of four-laning of 113.65 km has been awarded. The remaining works are to be awarded by October this year, official sources said here today.
