| International Women’s week concludes | | | JAMMU, MARCH 10 In connection with valedictory function of International Women’s Week, an impressive function was held at Brigadier Rajinder Singh Auditorium Jammu University today. “Female Foeticide” a burning issue of the society was the subject of the concluding function. The function was presided over by chairperson, Central Social Welfare Board, New-Delhi, Mrs. Rajani Patil, Minister for Health and Medical Education, Pt. Mangat Ram Sharma was the chief guest and chairman, State Social Welfare Board, Mr. G. M. Saroori also attended the function. Addressing a galaxy of social workers, NGO’s and artisans, Minister for Health Medical Education, Pt. Mangat Ram Sharma said that women folk deserve respect and honour at all levels and efforts are afoot to give special reservation to women at Panchayat, Local Bodies, Council and Legislative Assembly. He said, Social Welfare Board, Women Development Corporation, Women’s, Commission and above all State Social Welfare is at work to serve the women folk to help them out in upliftment of their socio-economic condition. Chairperson, Central Social Welfare Board of Women and Child Development Mrs. Rajani Patil in her address gave resume of the schemes under implementation all over India for the betterment of women folk, especially poor, deprived, destitute and deserving ones. She assured the NGO’s and dedicated social workers that in view of disturbance in the state since last 2 decades, the state would be given special consideration in respect of every programme. She further said that the state shall be extended the benefit of Special Category State on the pattern of North Eastern states where under liberal financial assistance would be made available for Integration scheme for women empowerment for setting up of Training cum production centres and other income generating units for women. The programme attended by over 400 women drawn from various voluntary organisation was also addressed by chairman, J&K Social Welfare Board Mr. G.M. Saroori. He said that since the functioning of this board had come to a stand still during the last 18 years, as in the case of other Departments, received fillip especially after Smt. Patil took over as Chair person Central Social Welfare Board. Mr. Sarrori informed that presently the Board is running 350 Creches under Rajiv Gandhi National Creche Programme, 2 Short Stay Homes for Women, 2 Swadhar Homes for victims of October-2005 Earthquake & 15 Family Counselling Centres. As regards Awareness Generation Camps, the Board has sanctioned 200 Awareness generation Camps for Rural & Poor Women during the current financial year. Mr. Saroori apprised Smt. Patil that although the position with regard to Female Foeticide in the State is not so grave yet in order to “Nip the Evil in the Bud” the State Social Welfare Board has been organizing special campaign against this Social Crime. As regards Women’s Empowerment Women’s status in J&K, Mr. Saroori stated that the J&K state has the privilege of providing 33% reservation of seats for women not only in Panchayats but also in the other Local Bodies like Municipal Committees, Councils & Corporations. Besides the J&K is the only state which has provided 50% reservation of seats for Girls in Medical Colleges. Mr. Saroori, however, said that much more needs to be done especially for those who have been orphaned or widowed during the last 18 years of turmoil in the state. In this connection he requested Smt. Patil for liberal allocations under various Schemes for the state board especially under Rajiv Gandhi National Creche Scheme (1000 Creche Units) Condensed Course of Education for female school Drop uts (200 Courses), 1000 Awareness Generation Camps during 2007-08. Besides Mr. Saroori appealed that during the next five years the state of J&K should have at least one Short Stay Homes, one Swadhar Shelter Home & one Help Line in each of 22 Districts of the state. Similarly, the Family Counselling Centres be sanctioned at Tehsil Level. Secretary, Social Welfare Board, Mr. V.K. Koul in his address thanked the chief guest and Ministers for their dedicated attitude towards welfare programmes and upliftment of women. He hoped that the patronship of these people would continue in future so that state would usher in the atmosphere of peace and prosperity. |
