| Paharis to boycott poll, if ST status is not given’ | | | JAMMU | MAR 10 Jammu and Kashmir Pahari Welfare Forum has threatened to boycott the forthcoming assembly elections if Scheduled Tribe status to the Pahari people is not granted before issuance of Assembly election notification. Lokesh Kumar Sharma, General Secretary Pahari welfare Forum, while addressing a press conference here today, stated this, according to a press release. He said if a special ordinance granting ST status to the Pahari people of the J&K state is not passed before issuance of election notification, the people of Poonch, Rajouri, Uri and Karnah, Keran and Thangdhar will start agitation and boycott the polls if required. He further stated that all the queries regarding the case have been replied by the concerned authorities and the file is lying with Prime Ministers office. “We are not in favour of affecting any other community or tribe, but Paharis have a right to strive for getting the S.T. Status at par with the Gujjars, who have not been defined nomadic in any of the census since 1901 to 1941”, he argued. Other who spokes on the occasion included Shakeel Azad, Talib Abas, Ravinder Kumar Bitta, Mohd. Sabar, Dr. Khaliq Anjuman, Raja Maroof Khan Advocate, Mohd. Abass Khan Advocate, Sunil Kumar Sharma, S. Manmohan Singh.
