Various pest control measures initiated by the government in the ladakh region have helped to check the spread of locust infestation on field crops to a greater extent, Agriculture Minister Abdul Aziz Zargar said in the legislative council.
He said the locust infestation was reported in pastures of Changthan area in Leh district during 2005 and the disease appeared again this season. A similar infestation was reported from Zanskar area of Kargil district this year but there were no reports last year.
In order to prevent the occurence of the problem again, the Agriculture Department has launched a awareness campaign to check pest invasion in new areas, he added.
Replying to a question on the market intervention scheme, Zargar said 11,180 growers of the state were benefited by the scheme and an amount of Rs 2.5 crore were spent under it in 2004-05.
He said the government would consider exemption of interest and penal interest of loans outstanding against the fruit growers. However, they shall have to pay the principal amount in easy installments.
