| Dilawar directs Administration to tackle people’s problems in snow-affected areas | | | JAMMU, MARCH 13 Minister for Horticulture, PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Mohammad Dilawar Mir today directed the officers of Horticulture department to gear up and mobilize the field functionaries to assess the damage caused to fruit crops and trees and also provide technical guidance to the growers to protect their damaged trees due to incessant rains and heavy snowfall. Chairing an emergency meeting of the officers and engineers of Horticulture, PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control departments here today, the Minister asked the concerned heads of departments to be present at their respective headquarters round the clock so as to ease the difficulties of the people. Minister directed the Chief Engineers of both Jammu and Kashmir divisions to set up control rooms and press into service all available de-watering pumps in coordination with Fire and Emergency Services Department to remove water from low lying areas. He called for taking all precautionary measures to meet any eventuality in coming days due to melting of snow and consequent rise in water level. Principal Secretary, Agriculture Production Department S. S. Sahni rmed that Almond crop over 14000 hectares of land in valley is feared damaged due to snowing as there was 60 percent flowering on almond trees it was also observed that the snow may probably affect Peach, Plum, Apricot and Pear crops. Principal Secretary Agriculture S. S. Sahni, Commissioner Secretary Hydraulic, Mehboob Iqbal, Chief Engineer PHE, Jammu Vinod Goswami, Chief Engineer, Irrigation V. K. Abrol and Superintending Engineer (Hydraulic) Jammu were present in the meeting.
