Incessant Rains: State holds disaster management meeting

Chief Minister Jammu and Kashmir State Ghulam Nabi Azad chaired a high level meeting of State level committee on disaster management at Civil Secretariat here today to take stock of all measures taken by different agencies of the government in the wake of incessant rains and snowfall in the state.
Besides Minister for School Education Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, Minister for Health and Medical Education Mangat Ram Sharma, Minister for Power Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister for R&B Gulchain Singh Charak, Minister for Agriculture Abdul Aziz Zargar, Minister for Housing and Urban Development Qazi Mohammad Afzal and Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Mohammad Dilawar Mir, senior army, civil and police officers were also present in the meeting.
Chief Secretary C. Phunsog, Financial Commissioner Home B. R. Kundal, Director General of Police Gopal Sharma, Principal Secretary Power Development Madhav Lal, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Anil Goswami, Principal Secretary General Administration K. A. Ganai, Financial Commissioner Revenue G. D. Wadhwa, Corps Commander 16 Corps Lt. Gen. T. K. Sapru, Additional Director General of Police Kuldeep Khuda, Commissioners/Secretaries, Divisional Commissioner Jammu, various heads of departments, chief engineers of different engineering disciplines and other senior civil, police and army officers participated in the meeting.
Chief Minister who was personally monitoring the situation for the last two days was rmed that all inter-district roads in Kashmir valley have been cleared for movement of traffic by pressing into service 40 snow clearance machines.
Chief Minister further sanctioned purchase of more snow cutters worth Rs. 4 crore in the meeting.
However, the meeting was rmed that in Jammu division, three districts of Doda, Rajouri and Poonch are still cut-off and work is going on speedily to clear these roads.
Beacon authorities rmed Chief Minister that they have already pressed into service their entire men and machinery so that the national highway is restored for traffic as soon as possible.
The meeting was rmed that as a result of incessant rains and snowfall, 50 percent of power supply in Jammu division was affected. Similarly, the power supply in Kashmir valley was also badly affected.
Chief Minister advised Minister for Power and Principal Secretary Power Development Department to personally monitor immediate restoration of power supply.
Chief Minister also directed that keeping in view accumulation of water due to melting of snow in Srinagar city and other towns in Jammu and Kashmir, dewatering operation should be taken up on warfooting.
Azad also advised police authorities to ensure that no hoarding takes place in any part of the state. The Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department rmed that adequate supply of all essentials is available in the valley and other parts of the state.
Chief Minister was also rmed that air services to the valley were disrupted due to bad weather as well as accumulation of snow at Srinagar airport. He directed for immediate snow clearance so that flights could operate.
He also advised Minister for Power Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister for Housing and Urban Development Qazi Mohammad Afzal and Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Mohammad Dilawar Mir to rush to Srinagar through first available flight and monitor the situation.
It was decided that educational institutions shall remain closed for the whole current week in Kashmir division excluding Ladakh, and affected areas of Jammu division. It was further decided that the examinations and interviews which are being presently conducted by the Board of School Education and SSRB, special arrangements will be made in due course for holding such examinations and interviews for candidates who cannot appear in these examinations and interviews as a result of rains, snowfall and road blockade.
Chief Minister also advised that all control rooms shall remain operational round the clock. He said that at district, sub-division and tehsil level also such control rooms should function round the clock.
Chief Secretary at state level and Divisional Commissioners at divisional level will coordinate all measures which are being taken in the wake of incessant rains and snowfall and shall be holding review meetings on daily basis.
