| Demanding Gojri Research Center JU students boycott their classes | | Stage picketing at JU main gate for hours | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 12: Extending their support to ongoing agitation of Gujjar Bakerwal Students Welfare Association (GBSWA) demanding establishment of Gojri and Pahari Research Center, hundreds of students of Jammu University today boycotted their classes and blocked main gate of University for several hours. Meanwhile, when the students were observing picketing in front of University gate under the aegis of Progressive Students Association (PSA), some outsiders along with some students (allegedly opposing the demand of establishment of Gojri and Pahari Research Center) firstly entered into verbal duel and later on thrashed students including some girl students. In the morning, Miffed over deteriorating condition of GBSWA members, who were observing fast unto death since last three days, activists of PSA along with other students boycotted their classes and hold picketing in front of Vice Chancellor secretariat. The protesters were raising slogans in favour of the demand of establishing Gojri and Pahari research centre at Jammu University, which was approved in 2008, in JU council meeting. The Vice chancellor Prof Mohan Pal Singh Isher came out of his chamber and maintained that the JU was short of funds and post has not been approved. "The decision will only be taken in the JU Council meeting", the VC informed the protesters. After getting VC's response, the protesters moved towards University main gate and hold picketing, after blocking the main gate. The protesters blocked JU main gate for many hours and in the meantime three students came in a Maruti car and allegedly misbehaved the protesters including female students. "Kapil Shastri a scholar of Department of Sanskrit and Nikhil Sharma a student of Law School firstly abused and later threatened female protesters in full public view", a student of JU maintained, adding that the said students allegedly misbehaved with female students and also threatened with dire consequences. Large number of police personnel and JU staff were present on the occasion but they remained mute spectator over the issue. In the meantime, when male protesters intervened, Kapil Shastri, Nikhil Sharma along with half a dozen miscreants (mostly outsiders) thrashed an activist of PSA, Mohammad Sardar Bhatti, but again police watched the incident as hapless citizen. In the meantime some other students including scholars intervened and rescued protesters from the miscreants. Later on, protesters who were attacked submitted a written complaint with Dean Students Welfare against the assaulters. "When we were protesting outside VC secretariat, Naseeb Ali had threatened us that they would teach us a lesson and within few minutes, Kapil Shastri and Nikhil Sharma came in a Maruti car and started misbehaving and later assaulted the protesters", MS Bhatti informed. He further said that it was the duty of state government to promote and preserve local languages and especially in university such institutes should be established to promote and preserve cultural heritage. "In our state there are 20 Lakh Gujjars and Bakerwals and their demand is very genuine. We are supporting the demand of GBSWA from the very beginning", he said. Spokesperson Marvi Slathia informed that they have submitted a complaint before DSW. "Today we are attacked by those who are against the establishment of Gojri Research Institute and there is every possibility that they will use such tactics again. We are supporting and will fight tooth and nail for the demand. The miscreants will not desist us, from our struggle", she asserted, She further said that if any untoward incident would be happened in future with her, MS Bhatti and Talib Hussian, same attackers and Jammu University authorities would be responsible. Pertinently, the activists of GBSWA are on hunger strike since last three days and are not even drinking water. On Tuesday night students had come out of their hostels and protested till late night in front of VC's residential quarter. |
