3/14/2007 11:30:06 PM

Jammu/Srinagar, Mar 14:
Taking strict posture, chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today asked the striking employees of Power Development Corporation to resume their work within 24 hours or face stern action. However, terming the CM’s statement as `pressure tactics’, the PDD employees union has refused resume work till their long pending demands are fulfilled.
Well informed sources said that the chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad chaired a meeting of senior government functionaries at Srinagar to review the situation arising out of heavy snow and rain fall across Kashmir region.
Restoration of power supply, clearance of roads, stock of food grains and other related matters were discussed in the meeting, sources said adding, the chief minister was not happy over the way in which power crises was being handled by the authorities.
Sources disclosed that the Azad asked the authorities to speed up the restoration work by putting all men and machinery in work so that the common masses may not suffer. “The CM passed instructions on the spot that the power employees on strike should be asked to resume their work within 24 hours failing which strict action should be initiated against them to the extent of termination of their services”, sources said.
However, despite the clear message from the CM, the power employees refused to call off their strike.
President Non-Gazetted Power Employees Forum Rafiq Ahmed Khanyari said that the statement issued by the chief minister was nothing more than pressure tactics aimed at creating panic among employees.
“We have been pressing for these demands for years but the concerned authorities do not seems to be concerned towards our plights”, he said adding, “We are among the sufferers of this situation but strike is last resort for us”.
He claimed that the employees on strike are ready to face any action initiated against them. “We will not call off our strike, let the government do what is feels just”, he adds.
