| Azad takes stock of valley situation in wake of heavy snow | | | Srinagar, March 14 Immediately after resumption of air traffic to the valley, Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad along with a group of Ministers including Minister for Education Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, Minister for Power Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora and Minister for Housing and Urban Devlopment, Qazi Mohammad Afzal arrived at Srinagar and straightaway convened a high level officers meeting at SKICC to take stock of all measures taken by divisional administration to deal with the situation arisen out of heavy snowfall. Chief Minister was informed that all district headquarters of the valley and important towns have been connected and presently 39 snow-cutters and snow-clearing machines are pressed into service and 300 km of road length cleared. The Chief Minister directed the Beacon authorities to provide 3 Snow Cutters to the Divisional Administration immediately so that the roads in the areas of Pahalgam, Damhal-Hanjipora and Shopian are cleared which have witnessed heavy snowfall. The Chief Minister was told by the Chief Engineer Power that all major supply trunk lines and grid station have been charged in time and there is no shortage of power in the valley. However the consumers are still facing shortage of power because of the strike by the Power Employees Union. The Chief Minister advised the power authority to take all necessary and immediate measures and appropriate action so that the striking employees join their duties without causing any inconvenience to the public at this crucial juncture. Regarding the stock and supply position, the meeting was told that ample stocks of ration and essential supplies are available. It was given out that five lakh quintals of rice, 45 thousand quintals of atta and 50 lakh litres of K-Oil are presently stocked in the CA&PD godowns. Besides, one lakh LPG cylinders are also stocked in the valley. To deal with the problem of stagnant water, the meeting was told that out of the 64 permanent dewatering stations, 24 with DG sets are functional and 36 mobile pumps have also been pressed into service. The Chief Minister directed the Fire and Emergency Services department to keep the 170 pumps available with them on standby. The meeting was told that 98 percent of dewatering station will be through with power supply this evening. The Beacon authorities while briefing the meeting about the status of the National Highway said that the road between Banihal and Panthahal was affected by landslides and bearing Panthahal rest of the slides have been cleared. The Chief Engineer said that with the improvement in weather the road will be thrown open to normal traffic. The Chief Minister asked the Beacon authorities to work out a long term proposal as the problem at Panthahal is recurring on and on. The Chief Minister has advised the people to pay due attention of the travel advisory issued by the Traffic department while traveling on the National Highway. Out of the 1447 water supply schemes, it was given out that 95 percent of the gravity schemes are functional and with the restoration of power supply the lift based schemes will also become operational. Assessing the damages caused to the Agriculture and Horticulture sectors, it was told that 60-75 percent damage has been recorded in Almonds due to low temperature injuries which were in full bloom. The Director Health informed the meeting that all district and sub district hospitals are functional and enough stocks of medicines are available. The Chief Minister designated the R&B authorities to monitor the position of fallen and damaged trees and remove them wherever necessary and advisable to ensure smooth flow of traffic. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister called upon all the agencies to work with zeal and dedication so that essential and immediate services are provided to the people at the earliest. He asked the concerned authorities to gear up the men and machinery at the District and Tehsil levels so that people don’t face any kind of inconvenience. Among others presented in the meeting were DGP, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, IGP Kashmir, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Sub Area Commander, Director Education, Director Health, Director CA&PD and Chief Engineers of Power, R&B, and Beacon.
