| Kar calls attention of Govt towards matter of public interest | | | SRINAGAR, AUGUST 03 – The Minister for Animal Husbandry Mr. Taj Mohi-ud-Din in reply to a calling attention notice moved by Mr. G. R. Kar told the Legislative Council today that “Checking rise in prices is not exclusively looked after by the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department. Various departments are involved in making efforts to check rise in prices. The Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department is vested with powers under Essential Commodities Act to look after availability and fix prices of essential commodities only. Prices of other commodities are determined according to market trends at National level and State level. He said that to ensure that prices fixed by the department are enforced in the market, checking squad/teams have been constituted in the Directorate of CA&PD Jammu/Kashmir as well as at district level. These squads carry out the market checking regularly in association with the officials of Legal Metrology Department, Drug Controller Organization, Municipal Corporations, etc. 2476 persons have been booked under Essential Commodities Act during last three years in the State. During current financial year, 85 persons have been booked. He said that District Level Consumer Protection Councils have been constituted in every district under the concerned Deputy Commissioner in which Assistant Director, CA&PD of the district and public representatives are the members. Vigilance Committees have been constituted at district/block levels to keep a constant watch on sale of essential commodities to the consumers at the prices fixed by the government. He said under public distribution system, food grains, sugar and kerosene oil etc are supplied to people at their doorsteps at PDS rates which remain unchanged, therefore, helps in stabilizing the market prices to the large extent. Due to inflation at National level, there was an overall rise in prices of essential commodities in recent past through out the country, but because of concerted efforts of the department of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department the prices have remained under control. He said instructions stands issued to display the rate lists of essential commodities at prominent places to educate the people and to ensure that people make purchases at the approved and notified rates only. |
