| CRPF replaces BSF in Valley | | |
Thursday, March 15, 2007 (Srinagar)
The CRPF on Thursday replaced the BSF for counter-insurgency operations in 10 towns of Jammu and Kashmir hit hardest by militant violence.
It completes the phasing out of the border guards from such duties in the region.
Ten CRPF units took charge in as many villages of north and south Kashmir, said a CRPF spokesman.
The towns where the BSF was replaced included two each in Sopore, Budgam and Baramulla in north Kashmir and two each at Tral and Pulwama in the southern part of the state.
The CRPF has replaced the BSF in counter-insurgency operations in Srinagar three years ago but two units of the BSF have been retained at the Raj Bhavan and the airport, the spokesman said.
The Central government had decided some time ago to phase out the BSF from counter-insurgency operations so that it could focus on its primary duty of guarding the frontiers.
The process was, however, delayed as the CRPF personnel did not have adequate training and support in key areas like intelligence gathering.
With the new inductions, the total number of CRPF units in Jammu and Kashmir has gone up to 72. While 14 units are deployed in the Jammu region, the remaining are in the Kashmir Valley.
The new units inducted in the valley mostly comprise recruits inducted by the CRPF over the past couple of years.
These personnel were given a month-long pre-induction training during which they were made familiar with key issues like human rights, the spokesman said.
