| Water and power supply privation still mar life in Jammu region | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 24: Though the sweltering climate has smothered a bit with mercury sliding down a bit but the water and power supply still is irregular hitting the routine life people in Jammu region with every passing day. Forget about the far flung areas/outskirt of winter capital even the winter capital, the Jammu itself is facing acute shortage of water and power supply which is visible on ground where people get water once in couple of days as earlier, people used to get water twice daily. Similarly the power supply scenario too has gone bad to worse forcing people to pass odd hours every now and then courtesy Power Development Department which opts for unscheduled power curtailments. And as the things are out of the ordinary at the capital town, others districts and localities outside Jammu city too are living a miserable life in the want of proper water and power supply where the situation is worse. Taking the example of Doda and Kishtwar districts, people have to turn towards water tankers to get the drinking water as the normal supply is not proper and safe. Non-completion of water Dessa-Doda water scheme and non-functioning of filtration plant at Kishtwar are forcing people of these two towns to drink contaminated water being supplied through tankers. Despite having approved water supply schemes, the public health engineering department has failed to complete the work on these schemes since years. As for Doda town, a water scheme to bringing water from Dessa was announced. And concerned department laid pipes but the ambitious scheme still is far from reality. During previous minister's tenure, water was supplied in Dessa-Doda pipe line but not from the actual source, Dessa stream, but from tankers. This was aimed to give the impression that scheme has been completed and people of Doda will soon get safe and enough drinking water. The things are not different at Kishtwar town as people are forced to drink the contaminated water coming from Lalla and Nai Ghar streams, which is supplied to the own without filtration. A filtration plant in Kishtwar was installed to filter the water coming from Lalla and Nai Ghar streams but this filtration plant is non functional. The shortage of power supply, which is irking most to people in Jammu region still remains as it was on the start despite setting of so salled ambitious Hydal Power Projects as curtailments still are the mark of the day in winter capital of the state. |
