| Political colour being given to Justice Chaudhry issue: Musharraf | | |
ISLAMABAD, MAR 15
Under attack from the Opposition for suspending Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, President Pervez Musharraf today hit back accusing them of giving a "political colour" to the controversy.
Breaking his silence on the issue for the first time, Musharraf told a large public meeting in Gujaranwala that the case was being dealt by the Supreme Judicial Council, a panel of top judges, and he would abide by its verdict.
Musharraf sacked Justice Chaudhry on March 9 accusing him of misconduct and misuse of authority and forwarded the charges to the five-member SJC which is hearing the case. Lawyers across Pakistan have been protesting the ouster by boycotting courts.
Terming the removal of Justice Chaudhry as a legal issue, Musharraf said he had no right to speak on it and the matter would be decided according to the Constitution by the Supreme Court.
Without directly naming any opposition parties, he said a "political colour" was being given to the controversy in order to further their interests.
Musharraf also said deliberate attempts were being made to bring lawyers onto the streets.
"I promise you all that court will decide on it and there is no need to interfere. Even I do not have the right to interfere. Let the court decide on it. Whatever is deemed fit, I will bow my head and accept," he said.
His comments came as the crisis over the suspension of Justice Chaudhry took a new turn after a civil judge resigned from service to protest the manhandling of Chaudhry and his family outside his residence by the police on March 13.
