They have been celebrating this festival for more than 3000 years". Navreh is the lunar New Year celebrated in Kashmir. The festival falls on the first day of the Chaitra Navratras, which is the first day of the bright fortnight of the month of Chaitra. This day is also the first day of the Sapath Rishi Samvat. Navreh is a festival of gaiety and colors. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Kashmiri Pandits., he further added. He told, that Navreh is a day of rejoicing, not only because it is New Year, but also because it heralds the spring season after the long, hard winter. On the previous day of the festival, the Kashmiri Pandits used to visit the sacred spring of Vicharnag to take the holy dip to wash off all the impurities. In Kashmir, people on 'Navreh' look at a bowl full of rice early in the morning as it symbolizes riches and fertility and to have a plentiful future. |
