| BSF hands over security in Kashmir to CRPF | | | Srinagar, Mar 16 The Border Security Force (BSF) has formally handed over its security-related duties in Jammu and Kashmir to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Nilin Kumar, the Deputy Inspector General (Operations) South Kashmir of the CRPF said that ten battalions of the BSF, who were engaged in anti-insurgency operations, would now be deployed at the border. "The CRPF will be replacing ten battalions of the BSF, of these two are in Tral, one in Badgam, three in Sopore and two in Baramullah. The BSF will now be deployed on the borders," Kumar said. The BSF personnel appeared reluctant to leave. "Our battle plan was to involve locals in our fight against terrorism. We have been here for a long time, and so, it is an emotional moment for us. But these are official orders and we will have to follow," said Gyanendu, a BSF officer. The BSF is responsible for guarding the country's land borders during peacetime and preventing trans-border crimes. It has an extensive intelligence network to support these missions. Indian authorities have never revealed how many troops are posted in Kashmir, but newspapers have put the number at close to half-a-million.
