| IIPA organizes workshop on ‘solid waste management’ | | | JAMMU March 17 The Jammu and Kashmir Chapter of India of Public Administration and World Wide for Nature India, organized a workshop and panel discussion on ‘Solid waste management’ here today. Narinder Singh Mayor Jammu Municipal Corporation was the chief guest while Dr S S Bloeria Chairman IIPA presided over the function. About 200 participants from different departments and NGOs attended the workshop. Director Seminars IIPA Sati Sahni in his introductory remarks said that population of Jammu city has crossed 10 lakh and the garbage, according to the conservative estimate, is about 250 tonnes. To manage such a quantity of garbage is a big challenge for the Municipality, JDA, Housing Board, Health and Urban Environment Engineering Departments, he added. Vinod Sharma, Commissioner JMC and R D Tiwari Chairman Pollution Control Board who were the key speakers presented scientific papers highlighting the problems of solid waste management in the city and suggested recommendations to solve this problem and also referred to the success stories of Surat and other places in India and Europe. Dr CM Seth Vice Chairman IIPA welcoming the participants said that awareness project on ‘solid management’ has been launched by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests in all the states and added that in Jammu and Kashmir more than 500 schools, colleges and NGOs are participating in this project. He said almost all districts shall be covered under the program in coming months he said and appealed all the Corporators to take up cleanliness drives in their wards to keep Jammu city clean from garbage and solid waste. Mayor in his address assured to initiate action in the solid waste management of Jammu city and said that every effort would be made to make the city more beautiful and attractive. In his presidential address, Dr Bloeria stressed on concentrating the reduction use of polythene and bio-medical waste of hospitals and nursing homes as these cause serious health hazards.
