| No proposal to offer special reservation | | | New Delhi, Mar 19: There is no proposal before the Government to offer Special Reservation for inter-caste marriage couples, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.
In a written reply, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment S Jagadeesan said the facility of reservation in jobs/educational institutions is extended to Scheduled castes, Schuduled tribes and Other Backward Classes notified by the government.
To whether the government will allow the children of such couples to declare themselves as casteless persons after they reach the age of 18, Jagadeesan said no such permission is required.
To another question, she said the population of people of 60 years and above is 7,66,22,321 and is not likely to cross 10 per cent of the total population by 2016.
She said the Government has adopted National Policy on Older Persons, which addresses the issues relating to legal, social, health problems of the elderly persons and development of inter-generational bonding.
To a related question, she said the Central government has substantially enhanced the additional central assistance to the states/UTs with effect from April 1, 2006 for payment of Old Age Pension to the destitude from Rs 75 to Rs 200 per month with a request to the states to make matching contributions.
The Ministry is proposing to introduce the legislation during the current session of Parliament, she said.
