| Sharma for formulation of comprehensive agriculture policy | | | JAMMU | March 19 Advocating formulation of a comprehensive agriculture policy in the state, the Jammu and Kashmir Kissan Union has said that farm sector needs to be developed on modern lines to boost production and ensure socio-economic transformation of the farmers. Addressing meeting of executive committee of the Union here today, Chairman and MLC Ashok Sharma said that farmers be encouraged and assisted by appropriate technology, financially and farmer-friendly interventions so that this vital sector of economy on which nearly 80 per cent of the population is directly or indirectly involved, could be put on fast track. Sharma also called for promotion of food processing industry with focused attention in Jammu and Ladakh regions. A Union handout claimed that the meeting also passed a resolution demanding launching of crop, cattle and livestock insurance scheme and demanded that the agriculture should be the first charge on Central and state budgets, ensuring timely and quality availability of seeds, fertilizers and other agricultural inputs .It also demanded that organic farming be promoted on large scale and seats reserved for farmers’ children in agriculture and other professional colleges. Among others who attended the meeting were Rajinder Singh, Vidya Sagar, Moti Lal Koul, Jhangir Mir, Raghunandan Khajuria, Janak Raj Sharma and Sushil Sharma.
