| Will Mufti Meet PM? | | | Jammu | March 20 Will Mufti Mohd. Sayeed leave for Delhi to meet Prime Minister,Dr Manmohan Singh in response to the invitation from the latter ? This is a million dollar question after the PDP leadership seems to have been ruffled by Chief Minister, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad’s categorical “NO” to the demand for demilitarization. As per the schedule the Prime Minister had invited the Mufti for talks on Tuesday but the former Chief Minister had, on Monday decided to fly to Delhi on Wednesday. Why this cooling period? Indications are that the PDP leadership has been examining the pros and cons of Mr Azad’s statement which he had made after coming out of the meeting he had with Dr Manmohan Singh. What seems to worry the Mufti is that Azad would have not made a categorical announcement on his opposition to withdrawal of troops from within the state unless he had received a nod from the PMO. The PDP leadership seems to be aware of the implications of Azad’s statement on the plea that after Azad had given vent to his feelings the Prime Minister could ill afford to take a stand which would be contrary to the stand of the Chief Minister. Mr Azad is said to be so much worked over the PDP demand for demilitarization and repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act that he has threatened to quit if troops were withdrawn from within the state at this juncture. Political observers are of the opinion that the Mufti may not opt for canceling his visit to Delhi because that would be not only confrontation with the Prime Minister but with the Congress High command, the two main focal points in the corridors of power in the centre but an act of insolence. He would prefer meeting the Prime Minister even if he knew that his demand may not be conceded immediately so that if the PDP was forced to quit the Government it could pose itself as a sacrificial lamb. Indications are that the Mufti may ultimately agree with the Prime Minister’s supposed rapprochement formula under which a high level committee was to be formed for reexamining the issue of demilitarization and repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act. Once it was done the Mufti could claim that part of his demand had been conceded by the centre by having agreed to reexamine the issues. Another matter that may force the Mufti to buy peace with the centre was the reports suggesting that some of the PDP ministers and legislators were opposed to snapping ties with the Congress. Once these MLAs and ministers made their feelings known that Congress could take advantage of it in many ways. |
