| J-K highway continues to remain closed for tenth day | | | Jammu | Mar 20 The Jammu and Kashmir National Highway remained shut for the tenth consecutive day today even as work continued in full swing to restore the damaged stretch of the road at Panthibal, 166-kms from here, officials said.
The Border Roads Organisation which maintains the highway, pressed its men and machine to repair the road at Panthial between Banihal and Ramban, which were damaged due to landslides and shooting stones.
With inclement weather continuing, it would take some more time to make the road fully traffic-worthy, officials said.
The damaged road stretch was temporarily restored yesterday to enable vehicles to cross over to valley and few hundred trucks carrying essential commodities were allowed to ply on it.
Bad weather conditions also prevented authorities from trans-shipping the stranded passengers yesterday, they said, adding nearly 14 stranded people, both in the valley and Jammu, were transshipped till March 18.
The 300-km arterial road, the only surface link between the valley and rest of the country, was closed on March 11 due to damage caused to a portion of the road at Panthial following heavy rains.
Meanwhile, in view of shortage of essential commodities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) on the instructions of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad resumed operation 'Humsafar' and pressed into service two of its planes for airlifting commodities to valley yesterday, they said.
During the sorties, a total of 37 tonnes of vegetables, 80,000 eggs and 25 tonnes of milk packets were airlifted here from Jammu airport, they said, adding the operation will continue today as well.
