Heavy rains lash state, flood alert sounded in valley
3/20/2007 10:51:41 PM
SRINAGAR: A flood alert has been sounded in Kashmir valley after the water level in Jhelum river rose one foot above the alarm mark at Sangam in Anantnag district due to incessant rains lashing wide parts of Jammu and Kashmir since Monday.
"Jhelum is flowing one foot above the alarm mark, just two feet below the danger mark at upstream Sangam area. It has been raining heavily since Monday and we do not want to be caught off guard," Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Basharat Ahmad Dhar said.
As little can be done at night, orders have been issued to all district development commissioners to keep the required manpower in readiness, he said.
Dhar said special arrangements have been made to transport boats from Dal lake here to low lying areas across the valley especially Anantnag and Pulwama districts.
Heavy rainfall has been continuing since Monday posing a threat of possible floods in low-lying areas of Kashmir valley.
Though schools in the valley have been closed for the day due to rains, a schoolboy died while two of his friends were rescued after falling into a stream in Pahalgam area of Anantnag on Tuesday.
Triggering a fresh spell of cold wave in the state, heavy rains and snowfall also resulted in landslides in Panthihal area which disrupted traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.
Many places in Kupwara district experienced heavy snowfall, prompting residents to take to kangris (earthen fire pots used to keep warm) or other modern gadgets for beating off the cold.
The snowfall in Kupwara started at around 7:30 am where the night temperature fell below the freezing point by 0.3 degrees Celsius, the Met Department said.
The heavy rainfall has caused fresh landslides at Panthihal on Jammu-Srinagar national highway, resulting in the closure of arterial road connecting Kashmir valley to the rest of the country.
Qazigund area recorded the highest rainfall at 62.6 mm followed by Kupwara at 55.8 mm and Banihal at 55.4 mm, the Weatherman said.
Moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded in Srinagar (24.4 mm), Pahalgam (37.4 mm), Katra (32.7 mm), Jammu (25.4 mm), Batote (32.8 mm) and Bhaderwah (28.4) as well.
The maximum temperatures across the state plunged by four degrees and was recorded at 10.2 degrees Celsius in Srinagar, 6.0 degrees Celsius in Qazigund and 0.4 degrees Celsius in Pahalgam areas.
Meanwhile, schools in Kashmir valley, which were to reopen on Tuesday after a week break, have been closed for the day due to heavy rains. Last week, the schools were closed due to heavy snowfall in the valley.
