| Ayub Khan passes away | | | JAMMU March 21 The 84 year old veteran Congress leader and former PCC Chief and Minister Mohammed Ayub Khan, who passed away at his Gandhi Nagar residence here today, after a prolonged illness was laid to rest in Gujjar Nagar grave guard this afternoon. The Nimaz-e-Jenaza was attended by a large number of people including PCC Chief Peerzada Mohammed Sayed, Minister for Health and Medical Education Pt,. Mangat Ram Sharma and several Congress, NC, PDP and SP leaders including G M Saroori, Jugal Kishore, R S Chib, Lal Mohammed Sabir, Om Chopra, Yash Paul, Ch. Talib Hussain, Sheikh Abdul Rehman, Murtaza Khan and Mushtaq Bukhari Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee in a meeting held at party headquarters under the chairmanship of Party President mourned the death of Khan and paid rich tributes to the departed leader. The meeting recalled his long service to the state and the nation who remained in active public life from early 1950s. The party also condoled the death of Ali Mohammed Mir, former MLA Badgam and Sardarni Parkash Kour, wife of former Minister S.Rangil Singh and conveyed its sympathies with the bereaved family. Khan born at village Chamalwas of Banihal Tehsil did his Matriculation from Punjab University in 1938 and Degree from SP College Srinagar in 1942. He joined as Head Master Kashfi High School in 1945 and was appointed as Provincial Relief Office for displaced persons from PoK in 1947 Khan was elected to the first Constituent Assembly in 1948 as NC candidate led by Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah and represented Gool Gulabgarh Assembly constituency from 1953-1977, elected again from Reasi constituency in 1987. Contemporary of G M Sadiq and Syed Mir Qasim, Khan remained a loyal Congressman throughout his political career when NC was merged into INC. He was elected as MP from Udhampur Constituency in 1988 and was Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly in Bakshi Ghulam Mohammed regime. Became Cabinet Minister and later PCC President during Sadiq’s time and remained President J&K Cooperative Union from 1996-2006 and Chairman JAKFED from 2002-06 and was actively associated with Cooperative movement for most of his life. Khan, a gentle man of par excellence was known for his secular and progressive ideals and was popular for his qualities amongst the people of different sections of the society. The PCC expressed its grave shock and grief over the demise of Khan and observed two minute silence in his memory and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and courage to the bereaved family.
