| UPA brass meet today to discuss crisis | | | NEW DELHI: With the fierce opposition onslaught over the Nandigram massacre hurting the government's Left ally, the top leadership of the ruling UPA coalition is meeting the Left leaders on Wednesday. At a dinner being hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, senior Left functionaries are expected to exchange views with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and senior ministers. Though the Left has its own list of grievances like prices, what is likely to dominate the talks is the brutal killing of villagers, including women and children, by a combined force of police and Marxist cadres at Nandigram. For the first time since the formation of the UPA government in 2004, the Left is clearly on the backfoot. The government has already decided to revisit the SEZ policy proposing to ban acquisition of farmlands with official intervention in future. The meeting was demanded by RJD boss Lalu Prasad to discuss the future of the SEZ policy and crisis facing agriculture. Normally, the Left functionaries have always set the rule for such interactions pressing the ministers to explain issues pertaining to their ministers. It is to be seen whether the Nandigram crisis can cause a role reversal at the get-together.
