Bedlam in Parliament over 'state terror' in WB
3/21/2007 10:58:36 PM
NEW DELHI: The Nandigram killings rocked Parliament for the fifth consecutive day on Tuesday with the Opposition's attempt to raise the issue of 'state terror' leading to frequent adjournments.
In the Lok Sabha, L K Advani accused the Centre of having "failed to prevent Operation Nandigram and terror unleashed by brute state power". Even before he could complete his submission, CPM members vehemently protested drowning his words.
Raising his voice above the din, Advani said: "The Marxists have exposed themselves in West Bengal." The furore prompted Speaker Somnath Chatterjee to adjourn the House.
As soon as the Rajya Sabha met in the morning, Congress members demanded an apology from BJP chief whip S S Ahluwalia for the unseemly spectacle of his snatching away business papers from finance minister P Chidambaram on Monday.
With the noise level rising, the House was adjourned. When the Upper House met in the afternoon, BJP members retaliated by raising the issue. They called for immediate intervention by the Centre to prevent further flare-up of police atrocities on women and children.
As Chidambaram got up to move an amendment to the taxation Bill, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj asked the chair about the fate of her party's notice on Nandigram. The Bill was passed amid loud protests by BJP and Trinamul Congress members.
