| Court notice to Lalu, Rabri on corruption case | | | Patna, March 22 The Patna High Court Thursday issued notice to Railway Minister Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi in connection with their acquittal in a 1998 corruption case of amassing wealth disproportionate to their income.
The court was hearing the Bihar government's appeal, challenging their acquittal in what is known as the disproportionate assets case, an offshoot of the multibillion rupee fodder scam. The court had adjourned the hearing on Wednesday after the special public prosecutor sought a one day adjournment.
Court sources said Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi, both former chief ministers of Bihar, were asked to submit their reply to the notice within two weeks.
The state government had challenged the couple's acquittal by a special CBI court on Dec 18, 2006.
The CBI court in its verdict had said the couple was innocent of the charges of amassing Rs.4.6 million, disproportionate to Lalu Prasad's known income during 1990-97 when he was chief minister of Bihar. Rabri Devi was included in the chargesheet later. The CBI had lodged the case in 1998.
Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad had dubbed the acquittal as vulnerable to law. And Chief Minister Nitish Kumar charged the CBI with being influenced by Lalu Prasad to dilute the case.
