| Hopes not yet dashed | | Leaders await amicable settlement | | Jammu,March 23 On one hand the PDP leadership continues to nurse a hope for an amicable settlement of the issues raised by Mufti Mohd.Sayeed,on the other it has not given up its plan of holding a meeting of its political Affairs Committee on March 25.The meeting is scheduled to be held in Srinagar which will be attended by 14 members, including three special invitees. The PDP General secretary, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, today said that while party Chief, Mehbooba Mufti,will preside over the meeting, Mufti Mohd.Sayeed was expected to brief the members on the outcome of his meeting with the Prime Minister. Mufti Sayeed has been joined by his party colleagues and MLAs, Muzaffar Hussain Baig, Ghulam Hassan Mir and Nizam-ud-Bhat,in Delhi where during the last two days they have been discussing various possibilities for ensuring an amicable settlement. Reports reaching here from Delhi said that Muzaffar Hussain Baig called on the National Security Adviser, M.K.Narayanan today.After their meeting Narayanan met the Mufti in presence of Baig and Mir.This was second meeting between the Mufti and Narayanan. Bhat said,in reply to a question,”we are hopeful that some settlement is worked out.”He said “we appreciate the wisdom of the Prime Minister and the Congress High Command in pushing forward the peace process,initiated by Mufti Mohd.Sayeed.” The PDP leader said that “our agenda regarding withdrawal of troops in a phased manner was pro-people and the Prime Minister,it was hoped,will realize the importance of our demand and suggestion.” Asked whether the doors for negotiations had been closed Bhat said that Mufti Mohd.Sayeed has already explained the party’s stand by having announced,soon after his meeting with the Prime Minister,that the “dialogue will continue.”He said that “we expect the Government of India to acknowledge the sensitivities in Jammu and Kashmir and strengthen our healing touch programme.” In reply to a question Bhat said “the final decision on ensuring survival of the ruling coalition lies with the Political Affairs Committee which is meeting in Srinagar shortly.” Asked if the committee meeting will be held in case the Mufti was held up in Delhi for further talks the PDP leader said “the purpose of the PAC meeting will be fulfilled only when Mufti Sayeed briefed the members of what exactly transpired between him and Dr Manmohan Singh.”
