| Fans tonsure themselves, tar portraits of cricketers | | | KOLKATA, MAR 24 Distraught cricket fans tonsured themselves and tarred portraits of the Indian team players in the metropolis in protest against the side's poor show at the World Cup in the West Indies, as security was strenghtened around Sourav Ganguly's residence. "They let us down, we won't let their portraits pollute any place in the city," said an angry fan at Kalighat, where portraits of the cricket stars put up ahead of the tournament were tarred. Members of the Cricket Lovers Association burnt posters of cricketers and staged an impromptu demonstration. "This is a black day for Indian cricket. Rahul Dravid is not captaincy material. He should be immediately sacked," said a fan, Abhijit Mukherjee. Near Sourav Ganguly's residence at Behala, cricket fans wept and tonsured their heads against India's defeats to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. "You won't understand how hurt I am. Their poor show has given me a blow here," a young man said, pointing to his heart. The ire was also directed at coach Greg Chappell, with hastily scrawled posters screaming for his dismissal and that he return to Australia. "Chappell is responsible for our performance. He has failed to build a set team. His mindless experimentations have ruined the team," said a young fan. Police said they have stepped up security near Ganguly's residence. "We have tightened security there. A police picket has been posted," West Bengal Inspector General (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said.
