Journalist abused, beaten by police cops
3/25/2007 11:18:38 PM
BHADERWAH, MAR 25
The working journalists of district Doda have strongly condemned the unruly behaviour of Police with a senior journalist Mohammed Majid Malik, while he was proceeding towards Akthar to cover the Chief Minister’s visit there and demanded suspension of the erring police personnel for their alleged undue harassment to the senior journalist.
The working journalists group said that it is not the first case of its kind as previously also, the Policemen have been creating hurdles for the journalists to cover functions of the VVIPs in the area and threatened to launch agitation and boycott all government functions, if action against the erring police personnel, was not taken. .
Majid, who was going to village Athkar,8 Km away from Bhaderwah town, to cover the Chief Minister’s visit there, was not only stopped at Seeri Bazar but was even beaten by the people in Khaki and even threatened him of dire consequences in presence of large number of people
When Majid pleaded that he was a journalist and was proceedings towards Akhtar to cover the Chief Minister’s visit there, the Police personnel on way stopped him and did not allow him to proceed further. On being asked to contact SSP Doda or DIG, the police cops are reported to have told the journalists that they do not bother for such officers as they are themselves SSPs and DIGs and are ourselves the law markers. The police personnel also tried to snatch the camera from the journalist and used abusive language.
The unruly behavior of the Police personnel with a senior journalist has been viewed seriously by his colleagues. They have urged the Chief Minister and the Director General Police to identify the guilty police officials and award deterrent punishment to them for their alleged misbehavior and use of abusive language against the journalist fraternity as a whole.
