Jammu, Mar 25
The defeat of Team India at the hands of Sri Lanka in the World Cup and the imminent ouster of the team from the tournament has disappointed cricket lovers in the state. However, hoping against hope people are still praying for the defeat of Bangladesh at the hands of Bermuda in today’s match.
An improbable Bermuda victory which is unlikely to happen will however, ensure that Indian team sails into the Super Eight.
However, keen followers of the game, who are quite upset over the shock Indian defeats in the matches against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, opine that Indian run in the world cup was finished and there was no chance that the team can go through to the next round.
“We hoped India would bring home the trophy. They started very well with the bowling, but failed miserably with the bat. Looks like India and Pakistan have lost the crucial mindset needed by leaders,' said Onkar Singh, a government official here.
After Pakistan's ouster from the race, none of the Indians had for seen that Indian team would fall like nine pins and the fans would be forced to pray for a Bermuda victory.
“We never thought that a cricketing giant like India will need the services of Bermuda to move into the next round of the world cup”, said Mohd Shahid, a university employee.
'It is highly unlikely that a miracle would happen. Bermuda defeating Bangladesh is too far-fetched,' said a disappointed Vishal, 29, who had watched the India-Sri Lanka match the whole night.
The manner in which the whole team capitulated against Lanka is shameful and Indian cricket board should take action against non-performers, he added.
Another dejected fan demanded the scrapping of the world cup, saying the matches were fixed and it lead to the death of Pak coach Bob Woolmer.
The defeat of Pakistan was not surprising as the team was divided over leadership issues as well as the inclusion of some cricketers into the side.
A former cricketer said that there were differences among the Pak Captain and Coach and this had ensured the defeat of the team even before it left Pakistan.
However, Indian ouster from the world cup has surprised people as the team had the required depth in batting and bowling.
'India's defeat is more disheartening since they had the capacity and talent to do it. Let us now address the weaknesses of the team rather than criticize individuals,' said Sunil Kumar.
