| Regaining popularity in cities, Radio still a favorite among rural folk | | | Jammu, Mar 25 Even though the satellite News Channels to some extent have succeeded in thriving among urban masses, the traditional radio listeners still have the same craving for the news broadcast at different times of the day. New Generation which witnessed the mushrooming of satellite channels over past twelve to fifteen years developed more inclination towards the music and other entertainment programmes, instead of watching News on the idiot box, Radio however, has been an all time favorite not just for News listening but other programmes as well. The casting of News has entirely changed after Gurgeet Malik IIS woman officer from the state took over the charge as News Editor of Radio Kashmir. The people in far-flung areas still wait for evening news like they wait for a special occasion to come. Not only by the virtue of its popularity, Radio is fast becoming popular even among new generation with the Radio News section in Srinagar Stations trying to reach the people to highlight their day to day problems. The introduction of the TV channels, however, could not leave much impact on the taste of habitual radio listeners in urban centers. “I have been listening Radio News since my childhood and nothing has affected this habit till date because nothing else could enable me to get the instant information about what actually is happening in the city”, said Ghulam Rasool a retail shopkeeper of up town Rajbagh area. “For being most prompt in giving the local news, touching all aspects of my day to day life I never miss evening news from radio”, Mohammad Ashraf a resident of Verinag told Early Times Reporter, while appreciating the News staff of Radio Kashmir Srinagar for starting programmes like Sheir Sheir Manzar and voice over during the Urdu bulletin.
