| Horticulture provides twin benefits of eco-balance, employment generation: Azad | | CM launches fruit plantation drive at Bhadarwah, inspects development works | | Jammu, March 25 Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad today launched fruit plantation drive by planting saplings of peach in the university campus at Bhadarwah. Highlighting importance of horticulture in the rural economy, Chief Minister said that horticulture promises greater future to the state adding that fruit marketing has become highly profitable industry for substantial revenue and employment generation. He said Jammu and Kashmir, for its different climatic and geographical zones, provides ample room for wide ranging fruit plants cultivation. He said while Kashmir valley and temperate parts of Jammu are ideal for cultivation of temperate fruits and stone fruits, plains of Jammu division are feasible for raising sub-tropical fruit orchards. He asked the experts to further intensify their activities in giving considerable fillip to fruit plant cultivation in the state as per feasibility and agronomic conditions. Chief Minister said that Bhadarwah and other hilly areas of Jammu division could be turned into massive fruit orchards opening new economic trends and helping boosting economy. Mr. Azad said that raising of orchards provide twin benefits simultaneously-these not only create palatable green environs maintaining ecological balance, but are great source of revenue and employment generation. He said Bhadarwah university campus should look full of fruit plantation with rare and different varieties so that this education centre could inculcate universal message of importance of plantation. He said quality planting material of different fruit varieties should be planted in the campus making it place of interest and research. Chief Minister was apprised that university has earmarked 37 kanals of land for raising fruit orchards in the first phase. He also stressed for growing more fruit plants in the vacant areas of Bhadarwah degree college premises. Chief Minister, who was also accompanied by Minister for School Education Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, went round various areas and took stock of tourism related development activities and other public service works under implementation in the area. He inspected work on construction of tourist huts and other such infrastructure being constructed by tourism development authority Bhadarwah. He also visited 1.5 MW Sartingal hydel power project. Responding to public demands including construction of small bridges in the area, Chief Minister directed District Development Commissioner Doda Dr. Pawan Kotwal to register the demands and reflect these in the district plan so that people’s requirements are met. He also directed District Development Commissioner Doda to speed up the work on Rs. 2.73 crore motorable bridge linking village Sehdi and Sharekhi. Chief Minister inspected work on construction of Bhadarwah stadium and several other development projects under execution during the visit. Large number of deputations and individuals called on Chief Minister and presented him their development-oriented demands. President Municipal Committee Bhadarwah Mr. Javed Azad, SSP Doda Mr. Manohar Singh, Chief Horticulture Officer Doda Mr. D. D. Dogra, SDM Bhadarwah and other senior officers were present.
