| CRPF set to replace BSF in Kashmir | | | JAMMU The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) would replace Border Security Force (BSF) for internal security in the entire Kashmir Valley by this month-end, official sources said. The CRPF has already replaced BSF in towns like Baramullah, Srinagar, Anantnag and as per the sources 10 more battalions were on their way to the Kashmir valley to take the charge of anti-terrorist operations. "The process should complete by the end of this month," sources said. In all, 60 CRPF battalions will take over the charge of managing the internal security, especially in the town areas. The government in 2005 had decided to shift BSF completely from the Kashmir valley by 2006. However, the process got delayed because of late arrival of the CRPF battalions. The CRPF was earlier deployed in the entire Kashmir valley when militancy began in 1989 but was soon replaced by BSF and regular Army after the arms uprising escalated in early 1990s. The Army took the control of entire anti-terrorist operations in Kashmir in 1993 and were shifted to make way for BSF in 1996, when first Assembly elections were held after seven-year-long central rule. The ruling alliance partner Peoples Democratic Party is pitching for troop reduction in the state. A committee is to look into this aspect. The announcement is expected any time.
