| US Senators write to Musharraf | | | Washington,March 25 Four prominent US Senators have written a letter to Pakistani President General Musharraf, asking him among other things to stop terrorist groups from using its territory to carry out attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.
They have also asked him to ensure that the 2007 elections are free and fair.
In their bluntly worded letter, the Senators have urged him to stop terror groups from using Pakistan as a staging ground for carrying out attacks in India.
"So long as known Al Qaeda affiliates like Lashkar e Toiba and Jaish e Mohammad and their leaders continue to enjoy safe haven on Pakistani soil, we believe that they will pose a grave threat to the safety of the United States, India and Pakistan," they said.
They reminded General Musharraf about his public statements on Pakistan's need for a vigorous, moderate democracy.
"The single most concrete measure of progress would be to allow all legitimate parties and candidates to contest the elections, including the senior leadership of the Pakistan's People's Party and Pakistan Muslim League," the letter said.
They also pointed out that unless Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto, the leaders of Pakistan's two oldest and most firmly established parties, are free to return from exile, it will be difficult for the international community to regard the 2007 elections as a true expression of democracy.
