Unruly scenes were witnessed in Public Health Engineering office here when the Junior Engineers roughed up their senior officer and the office account allegedly on corruption charges. This is perhaps for the first time when the junior colleagues have come out openly against their superiors in leveling serious charges of corruption and embezzlement in a particular government office.
The reports said that Junior Engineers have leveled serious charges of corruption and irregularities in the PHE Division and held the Executive Engineer Ghulam Mohammed Bhat and Accountant Niamatullah responsible for it and roughed up both in the office premises here in presence of general public. All the Junior Engineers staged a protest rally against the misdeeds of the Executive Engineer and the Accountant and charged them of misusing government money for personal benefits.
The situation took an ugly turn this morning when some Junior Engineers entered into a brawl with the Accountant PHE division Doda Niamatullah Zargar, who according to sources, was demanding commission for release of payments. The JEs allegedly subjected him to serve thrashing in presence of Executive Engineer Ghulam Mohammed. Batt. The JEs alleged that the Accountant was involved in bungling of Rs.80 lakh in the department and had a nexus with the Executive Engineer. When the Executive Engineer tried to intervene, he too was roughed up for shielding the corrupt Accountant.
The JEs also alleged that as per departmental records, Rs 14 crore had been shown having spent on various projects executed by the Department during the current fiscal but no work has been carried out on the ground. The Accountant and the Executive Engineer had made payments to the contractors against fictitious bills after charging commission from them, the Junior Engineers are reported to have alleged. .
The Junior Engineers have appealed the Chief Minister and the Minister for Public Health Engineering to order an inquiry into the alleged irregularities and immediately shift the Executive Engineer, who himself claims to be a close relative of CM Azad.
