Will Azad convene special assembly session to adopt a resolution on troop cut
3/29/2007 12:30:59 AM

Jammu, March 28
Will Chief Minister, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, convene a special session of the state Legislature in his bid to adopt a resolution urging the centre that before ordering withdrawal of troops leaders of all main political parties be taken into confidence ?
This question has assumed significance after the Chief Minister has gone on the offensive against the PDP by seeking support for his slogan against demilitarization from ruling coalition partners minus the PDP at a gettogether in Jammu on Tuesday.
Political observers here are of the opinion that raising of hands in support of the Chief Minister’s plea against demilitarization at a tea party lacked constitutional sanctity which could be achieved if a resolution to this effect was adopted by the state legislature.Once it was done it could isolate the PDP which has 17 members in the Assembly.
In view of a secret understanding between the Congress and the National Conference 26 MLAs belonging to the NC may also support Mr Azad.Such a resolution could have a bearing on the mind of the Prime Minister and the AICC Chief,Ms Sonia Gandhi.
However, the observers indicate that Mr Azad may not venture defying the centre by getting a resolution against demilitarization adopted by the state legislature when both the Prime Minister and the AICC Chief treated the Mufti a better bet for the central Government in Kashmir in the light of ongoing peace process and confidence building measures.
Observers says that survival of the ruling coalition depended on
Mr Azad and Mufti Sayeed. If the former tried to push the latter to the wall the Mufti will have no other alternative but to take the PDP away from the coalition. Hence next three weeks were crucial for the state as far as the survival of the coalition Government and new political equations were concerned.
