| CCS discusses troop reduction, relocation in J&K | | | NEW DELHI, MAR 29
An "informal" meeting of Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) was held here today to discuss the issue of troop reduction and relocation in Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and attended by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Defence Minister A K Antony.
"This was an informal CCS meeting," Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunsi told reporters when asked about the outcome of the meeting.
While officially, the Government was tight-lipped on the issues that were deliberated at the meeting, sources said that troop reduction and relocation in Jammu and Kashmir was among the main issues that came up.
Ahead of this 30-minute meeting, J&K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had met Patil and apprised him about the difficulties in reducing troops from civilian areas as he feared increase in violence levels.
Azad, who arrived here this morning, has also stressed for taking other political parties on board before taking such a decision.
The core committee of Congress had met last evening and discussed the issue of reduction of troops as demanded by PDP, its alliance partner in the state. Immediately after the meeting, the Prime Minister had spoken to PDP patron Mufti Mohammed Sayeed asking him to wait for some more time as he had to consult his colleagues again.
This prompted PDP, which was to hold its Political Affairs Meeting today, to postpone it to March 31.
