| NC advocates for restoration of Autonomy | | ‘Abrogation of Article 370, a constitutional impossibility’, Rather | | New Delhi MAR 29 Forcefully advocating for restoration of ‘Autonomy’ to Jammu and Kashmir, the senior National Conference leader and leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly. Abdul Rahim Rather, maintained that autonomy was the cornerstone of the relations between the Union and the Jammu and Kashmir, guaranteed by the Instrument of Accession and founding fathers of the Indian Constitution. Participating in the Working Group meeting on Centre-State relations held here today, the NC leader presented his case for restoration of autonomy to the state extensively and forcefully. He said, after the unconstitutional dismissal of the tallest leader of the State and the then Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah in 1953, the autonomy granted to the state was violated and eroded in the most un-constitutional manner and even the ‘Governors, who are manifestly agents of the Central government, did not hesitate to play havoc with the constitutional relationship between the State and the Centre’, he added. ‘The unwarranted fiddling with the State’s autonomy’, he said created the political and emotional atmosphere for the turmoil, which erupted in 1989’ adding that the Article 370 of the Indian Constitution is a bridge, connecting Jammu and Kashmir with the Federation.. Abrogation of this Article, is a ‘constitutional impossibility’, he asserted adding that ‘after the expiry of Constituent Assembly, there is no mechanism left to amend or abrogate it’. The NC demanded that the meetings of the Working Group should be held in the State itself, a party handout said. The CPM leader, M Y Tarimagi, who also took part in the meeting, pleaded for persuading the separatist groups to join the peace process dialogue.
