| Sinha, Azad eulogize odyssey to academic excellence | | | JAMMU, MARCH 29 Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd) S K Sinha has said that the temple city of Jammu is fast emerging as the centre of academic excellence with thrust on intellectual activities. After inaugurating General Zorawar Singh Auditorium Complex in Jammu University Campus here late last evening, the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of various universities in the State, said that the state-of-art auditoriums are also slated to be inaugurated in University of Kashmir and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in coming weeks. He complimented the Vice Chancellor and his team in Jammu University for taking the institution to highest pinnacles of excellence and said the university has become a hub of intellectual activity for civil society at national and international levels. Apart from academics, it has also made a name in cultural and extra curricular activities, he said while referring to the distinction having been achieved by the university in becoming first institution to bag ISO certification. General Sinha described the magnificent Zorwar Singh Auditorium as a symbol of pluralistic ethos of Jammu and Kashmir as it houses a heritage museum and art gallery depicting symbolic relationship of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, showcasing diverse cultural heritage. He said he has been associated with the auditorium from the day one and has been visiting the site to see the complex coming up brick by brick. He referred to the grant of Rs 30 crore announced by the then Prime Minister for Jammu University during his brief visit to Jammu and said his suggestion of having the auditorium in the name of General Zorawar Singh was readily accepted. ‘This is a befitting tribute to the great captain of war who traversed high altitudes for extending and drawing the geographical cantours of the State’, he added. The Governor also described Jammu as the city of warriors and said that a unique Balidhan Stambh is coming up in the university periphery which will be a tribute to the martyrs of the Army, Security Forces, Police and the people who laid their lives for the motherland. He also referred to the statues of Brigadier Rajinder Singh, General Zorawar Singh and General Bikram Singh raised at various locations in Jammu and Reasi and complimented the local sculptor for his excellent work. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad congratulated the Jammu University for having the auditorium in place in record time and said this will give fillip to various intellectual, academic and cultural activities. He said an auditorium of comparatively larger seating capacity would be ready in Kashmir University in a month or so. Azad referred to the ballet performed by the SPANDA artists and said that he was highly impressed by the great performance of Indian art. He said though he has been witnessing such events in rest of the country, but ‘it was unique and excellent’. The Chief Minister hoped that the mega auditorium in Jammu University will become hub of national and international seminars and events and provide a forum to the students for displaying their talent. He complimented the Vice Chancellor and faculty for achieving excellence in academic and co-curricular activities. The Vice Chancellor, Prof Amitabh Mattoo described General Zorawar Singh auditorium as a celebration of the symbolic relationship of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh and its composite culture. He expressed his sincere thanks to people of Jammu, students of the University and the State Government for extending cooperation to the institution. The highlight of the inaugural function was brass band concert by J&K Police Band and Ballet performance by a professional group SPANDA and mega fire crackers show in the sports complex. Chairman Legislative Council, P Namgyal, Speaker, Tara Chand, Chief Justice, Bashir Ahmed Khan, ministers, legislators and high ranking officers besides prominent citizens, academicians and students were present at the inaugural ceremony. Omar Abdullah, Bhim Singh and Ashok Khajura were also present on the occasion.
