| 800 suicides in J&K during 2011-13, 65 per cent victims married | | | Et Report
Jammu, Jan 27: More than 800 persons have committed suicide in Jammu and Kashmir during three years (2011-2013), with 65 per cent of victims being married. As per the data compiled by NGOs and Police department domestic issues are major reason for people taking the extreme step. During the period, in Jammu region alone, 384 persons took the extreme step to end their lives, of these 201 were males while 183 were females. Figures divulge that in 2011, 287 people in J&K lost their lives by committing suicide. Similarly in 2012, the figure had reached 400 mark. Scanning through past data, male suicide rate is higher in Jammu region, while in Kashmir Valley females commit more suicides. With depression and anxiety related disorders among the youth are emerging as a major concern, Health Department had started mental health OPD clinics at district hospitals in the state since 2010 to provide psychiatric help. For implementing the programme, Bangalore based National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) had trained nearly a dozen doctors."From the medical point of view, doctors are dealing with the patients with depression, post-traumatic stress disorders, anxiety related disorders. The main reason is depression and conflict, which engulfed the state since 1989", said Dr. Arif Magribi. It is pertinent to mention here that J&K Police has already involved several NGOs in its civic action programme and directions have been passed to all the police stations to coordinate with the social activist to reach out to youth and deal with the domestic issue cases in scientific manner.Before the advent of insurgency in J&K, incidents of suicides especially in Kashmir were virtually zero. Because of lingering violence over the years, post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) are fast gripping the people. |
