| National Conference opens its innings with a flag war | | | Jammu, March 29 flags were votes the National Conference has won the initial battle against its political foes in Jammu and Kashmir.This was evident when the city of temples wore a festive look with the red NC flags fluttering on each main rotaries,road arteries and on buses and matadors on Thursday when the National Conference demonstrated its strength by holding a massive public rally in the parade grounds. “Omar hamari jaan hein,farooq hamari shaan hein”(Omar is our life and Farooq is our honour) slogans embossed on banners attracted peoples’ attention.It was a colourful show.People atop buses and matadors,carrying plough engraved red flags,shouting full-throated slogans were seen making it to the parade grounds.The passenger transport system was affected when several hundred buses and matadors,carrying party supporters and workers,moving on the Jammu roads caused traffic jams. Another attraction was the presence of elephants,horses,camels moving lazily towards the parade grounds.Dance and music troupes danced their way to the venue of the public rally and the beating of drums,dholaks and shehnahee became louder and louder as leaders garlanded the party President who was accompanied by his wife Payal Abdullah. Groups of people from various ethnic groups had come with their traditional dress and headgear.The NC activists of party seva Dal were dressed in white kurta , white trousers and red caps and turbans.There was marked deviation from the tradition.The proceedings of the rally did not start with the recitation of hymns from scriptures but with the patriotic song “sarey Jahaan sey Acha Hindustan Hamara”. If the National Conference leadership wanted to exhibit its strength and the vigour in its tirade against the PDP it has achieved its purpose as the party leaders’ political stand received a resounding response from about 20,000 people which is considered a major success for the National Conference which has limited pockets of influence in Jammu district. Groups of people were seen jostling against one another for having a glimpse of Omar Abdullah and his wife,Payal,who had her first public exposure in Jammu today.The pro-Omar fans shouted at some party leaders and mediamen to be on one side so that they could have a glimpse of Omar and his wife.
