Some arms and ammunition were recovered from the possession of arrested Divisional Commander.A defence spokesman here this evening said that in a joint operation launched by Army, Police and CRPF, Hizbul Mujahideen Divisional Commander for South Kashmir was apprehended at Hanji Danter, near Anantnag town. The defence spokesman termed the arrest a big success and claimed that this would lead to serious setback for Hizbul Mujahideen in South Kashmir. "In an exceptionally synergized effort, the joint team of Army and Anantnag police were aggressively tracking Mubarak Ahmed Wani alias Major Saqib for the last many days. They had initially busted the over ground workers network of this militant which helped in choking his logistic support," said the defence spokesman. The defence spokesman said that on the night of February 1 at approximately 9:30 PM, acting on a police tip-off, Rashtriya Rifles troops, Anantnag Police and CRPF successfully intercepted Mubarak who was apprehended with an AK-56 Rifle. Huge quantity of ammunition along with a pistol and hand grenade was also recovered from him. "The hardcore militant has been trained in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) from 2002 to 2004 and he returned to Kashmir in 2007. He was active in Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam districts and was promoted to Divisional Commander in 2013. The militant is presently in the custody of Anantnag Police. His arrest will seriously affect the network of Hizbul Mujahideen in South Kashmir and will contribute in bringing peace in the region," said the defence spokesman. Meanwhile, police officials said that this is for the third time that Mubarak has been arrested by the police or security forces. The police officials said that Mubarak was first arrested in 2007 and second time in 2011. They said that after his release he had recycled and re-joined the ranks of Hizbul Mujahideen after his earlier arrests. "In a joint operation, Anantnag Police, 1 RR and 40 Battalion CRPF apprehended the Divisional Commander of Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit for South Kashmir, Mubarak Ahmad Wani alias Major Sakib son of Mohammad Ramzan Wani resident of Bangidar at Hanji Danter bridge. One AK 56, two magazines, 60 AK rounds and one pouch were recovered from his possession," said the police officials. The police officials said that the arrested militant commander had recycled for the third time in March 2013 and was active in the area of Pulwama, Kulgam and Anantnag since last one year. A case FIR number 10/2014 under section 7/25 arms act has been registered in police station Anantnag in this regard and investigation has been taken up. This is the second major breakthrough against militants in South Kashmir after the killing of a LeT militant at Kangan in Pulwama during an encounter with police and security forces during the intervening night of January 31 and February 1. |
