PDP-Congress alliance likely to continue despite Mufti’s loss of face
3/30/2007 10:46:54 PM

Jammu, March 30
Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, has played his cards well. Former Chief Minister, Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, failed to keep up his reputation of being a shrewd politician. He partly failed while Azad emerged victorious in the three-week long battle between the PDP leadership and the Chief Minister.
The only point where the Mufti has been able to extract a face saving concession from the Prime Minister by persuading the centre to constitute separate panels for reviewing the security scenario with reference to the PDP’s demand for withdrawal of troops.
Ghulam Nabi Azad put up a defiant face telling the Prime Minister and other Union Ministers that withdrawal of troops was out of question till militancy ended in the state.
The Mufti could have bargained for a better deal had not the massacre taken place in Rajouri on Friday where militants killed five civilians and injured four.
The incident came handy not only to the Chief Minister but to those in the centre, who were opposed demilitarization, for debunking the Mufti’s demand for reduction of troops.Even the supporters of the Mufti feel that the PDP patron had pushed hard the demand for demilitarization at a wrong time.
Reports from Delhi indicated that the Mufti had to eat an humble pie when his demand for including politicians in the committee for examining the security scenario was not accepted. He was told that since the issue needed review from the experts politicians, even for that matter ministers, had no role.
These reports said that finally the Mufti was forced to do a face saving act by accepting the suggestion on referring the demand for demilitarisation to a committee of experts. This was done to prevent internal crisis from engulfing the PDP because several ministers belonging to the PDP were opposed to pulling out of the coalition Government.
Another concession given to the Mufti was the centre’s decision to reorganize the coordination committee, which had been rendered irrelevant during the last over 15 months, which was likely to be headed by Mufti Mohd.Sayeed.Another decision taken by the centre was that the council of ministers would be expanded and some minor reshuffle was to be carried out in the portfolios of the ministers. It is not yeat clear whether some existing faces in the council of ministers will be dropped.
As per the reports the PDP patron has agreed to keep the ruling coalition intact. The alliance will continue so long the Congress did not adopt big brother postures and the PDP’s demand was accepted in phases.
