Situation tense in Kishtwar as JP retrenches 1000 workers
Workers term decision as pressure tactic, threaten to go on strike
3/31/2007 11:41:11 PM

Kishtwar, Mar 31
Situation is tense in this mountainous town of district Doda, where in an unexpected move Jai Parkash Industries retrenched more than one-thousand workers from Dul Hasti Hydro-Electric Project, this evening.
The matter about the retrenchment of the workers was kept deep secret till this evening; however, the town witnessed unprecedented security arrangements throughout the day today.
Sources disclosed to News Agency of Kashmir that authorities in JP Industries fixed a notice mentioning name of the retrenched employees outside its office in Kishtwar, this evening, without any prior notice to the workers.
Chinab Workers Union leaders claimed that the move is deliberate so as to pressurize government to hand over the construction work of Budsur and Pakal Hydroelectric Projects to the company.
“Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is expected to visit Kishtwar on April 2 to inaugurate DC office complex and retrenchment of workers at this stage clearly expose the intention of JP”, said Abdul Subhan General Secretary of the union.
He claimed that in an earlier meeting with JP authorities the Union was assured that no retrenchment would be done without prior notice to the workers and all benefits would be extended to the outgoing workers. “However, the sudden decision of the organization has come as shock to poor Labour classes, who have given their blood in the completion of the prestigious project”.
It would not be out of place to mention here that situation turn ugly last year when JP Industries retrenched 1400 workers followed by large scale protest demonstrations.
The Union now claims that it would go on agitation path in case authorities do not revoke the decision. “We will observe complete strike in Bagliar and Kishtwar projects if the decision is not revoked”, the general secretary of the union threatened.
If the sources have to be believed, the move was well planned. “JP managed creation of another workers union couple of months back with the help of some local politicians and they have claimed to enter into some kind of secret deal with regard to retrenchment of the workers”, added the sources.
