Jammu, Feb 14 : Jammu and Kashmir Batwal Welfare Association in collaboration with Guru Gyagi Foundation at Shahzadpur celebrated 117 birthday of Guru GyagiJi, here on Friday. According to press release, amid satsang, cultural items and bhajans by a Doyen of Punjabi Music Jyoti and renowned Punjabi Singer KrishanLal, thousands of devotees including men, women and children in colourful dresses, participated in the function despite below freezing temperature. Minister for Planning and Development Ajay Sadhotra who was Chief Guest, when arrived in the function, was given a warm welcome by the Reception Committee. Paying rich tributes to Guru Gyagi, Minister said teachings of the great saint are universal in nature and promote self-realization by devotion, service and love of mankind and the Supreme Being. He said the teachings have more relevance in present time and real tribute is to follow the path laid down by the Guru. The Minister gave away 'Medals of Honour' to eminent persons and 'Certificates of Appreciation' to students from Batwal community who performed well in Post-graduation, Graduation, Higher Secondary Part-II and Secondary School examinations during the year 1913 and wished them all the best for future.
Association General Secretary RL Kaith said it was a matter of great pride that the percentage of School going children of Batwal community has gone up by 79.9 as per the data collected by the Census Operation J&K. Kaith impressed the community members that children being future of hope the Biradari must be provided all opportunities to excel in academic and all other sports, professional and technical fields. Kaith also called for unity, simplicity and discipline among the community members. President of Guru Gyagi Foundation Capt. Kamal Chand Motan said Guru Gyagi was an apostle of peace, compassion and love, who gave the message of universal brotherhood and a just society but it is however unfortunate that on his birthday celebration there is no holiday under Negotiable Instrument Act. On this, a resolution was passed on the occasion with a voice vote demanding that in future, holiday be declared on the birthday of Guru Gyagi by a notification in the official gazette. Highlighting the present political, economic and social scenario of the Batwal community people, Association President Ex MLA Sat Pal Lakhotra said that it is a fact that since independence the Union as well as the State Government have done a lot for the advancement, upliftment and general amelioration of all socially and economically weaker sections but so far nothing has been done for the rearmost Batwal Community.
He said that his community despite having maximum strength has not so far been given any representation in the Upper House other important forums of the Government whereas other relative communities with a meager strength are given all sorts of representation in the State. Lakhotra urged the Government that this honour should also be extended to Batwal Community so as to ensure the scale of justice is even.
Ramesh Kumar Kaith while reading out memorandum said that during the year 1994, the Government of India with an object to ameliorate the living standard of the Batwal Community members, launched a study to assess their socio, economic and cultural life in the J&K State.
