Mobile rings create panic across Kashmir

The cellular service subscribers in Jammu and Kashmir have gone panicky following the rumors about spread of an unknown virus through cellular calls, which can inject tumor virus in human body.
Though the rumors about the killer virus was already in air, two incidents in Kashmir region have added fuel to fire, forcing number of cellular users to switch off their sets.
Reports reaching here revealed that a shopkeeper went unconscious, this morning, at General Bus Stand Anantnag district of South Kashmir, when he received a phone call from an unknown number.
Identified as Shabir Ahmed, the shopkeeper was shifted to hospital where he was being treated. Eyewitnesses said that the Shabir fell unconscious soon after he received the call and attached the phone to his ear.
Another person, Nissar Ahmed Bhat of Kakpura Pulwama was reportedly battling his life in civil hospital where he was shifted after a similar incident. If the eyewitnesses have to be believed, Nissar fell unconscious and started bleeding from nose soon after he received a phone call from a 0980980980.
Station House Officer Kakpura Naiz Mir admitted such incident and said, “We are investigating”. He, however, was of the opinion that it could be psychological impact of the rumors spread from last few days.
The rumors in the state have already taken its tool. Sources in telecommunication department said that the use of cell phone has temporarily reduced as subscribers prefer to switch off their cell phone as precautionary measures.
However, ruling any such threat Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited authorities have appealed the subscribers not to pay heed to such rumors, describing these as baseless.
Talking to News Agency of Kashmir, BSNL General Manager Mobiles Jammu said that these are merely rumors as no Exchange can generate such a number adding “if there is any, BSNL would not entertain such number through its exchanges.
He appealed to the subscribers not to pay heed to such rumors and avail the mobile facilities without any fear.
The rumors started from Samba area of Jammu after a caller convey to one of his relative that two people have died after receiving a call from numbers like 000000099999988888 and 99999999988888800000.
Though there was no official confirmation of any causality, the message was flashed by the mobile users though SMS and the rumor engulfed the entire state within one week.
Experts believe that sometime cell phone does not read the number when the call is made from outside the country or from any other cellular service provider. “This may have created panic among some subscribers leading to the panicky situation”, said Rajneet, an electronic engineer.
