| Former chief justice Rajendra Babu is new NHRC chief | | | New Delhi, April 2 Former chief justice of India S. Rajendra Babu Monday took over as the new chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The post had been lying vacant for four months. Former Supreme Court judge Shivraj V. Patil had been acting as chairperson during the period.
Justice Babu, born in 1939, is the fifth head of the NHRC. He will remain in office till May 31, 2009.
He was appointed permanent judge of the Karnataka High Court in 1988 and elevated to the Supreme Court in September 1997. Babu became the chief justice of India on June 1, 2004.
The chairperson for the rights body is appointed by a committee headed by the prime minister and including the Lok Sabha speaker, home minister, leaders of opposition in both houses of parliament and deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.
