Creation of new districts put extra burden on DIGs
4/3/2007 11:21:40 PM
Jammu, April 03
The creation of eight new districts ,four each in Jammu and Kashmir region has added additional burden on the shoulders of senior police officers of the rank of deputy Inspector general of Police entrusted with the job of supervising law and order in the districts.
Up till now each DIG would be in charge of two police districts in the state except for DIG central Kashmir whose jurisdiction extended from Budgam to Srinagar and to Leh and Kargil.
Official sources said here today that now the DIG central Kashmir,Farooq Ahmed will be incharge of not only Budgam and Srinagar districts but of Ganderbal(new district) and Leh and Kargil. Similarly the DIG in south Kashmir will be now be incharge of not only Anantnag and Pulwama but two new districts of Shopian and Kulgam. The DIG of Baramulla-Kupwara range will have Bandipore(new district) added to his jurisdiction.
According to these sources,DIG Doda-Udhampur police range will be incharge of Kishtwar, Ramban and Reasi also and for the DIG Poonch- Rajouri districts there is no additional charge. After creation of Samba as a new district its area has been included in the jurisdiction of DIG Jammu-Kathua belt.
An officer in the police headquarters said that “we may have to review the range area placed under each DIG so that additional burden could be reduced.” He said “we have to think of the workload of DIG central Kashmir, and DIG Doda-Udhampur because each of them have been placed incharge of five districts.”
A senior police officer, posted at new Ramban district headquarters said “the entire security system in the new districts was under review and after it was completed deployment of security forces will be revamped.”
He said first of all the Government has to release funds for building the infrastructure in each new district headquarters because at present various offices were functioning in make-shift buildings which were not spacious enough. Though people in new districts were seemingly happy as redress of their grievances would take place at the nearby headquarters, they were upset over the lack of basic infrastructure at the new places as shifting of files from the existing district headquarters to the new had not been completed yet.
Rampal of Ramban said “I am happy.I have not to cover a distance of about 80 kms for resolving my work in the offices at Doda district headquarters.”
Official sources said that the Government has decided to release required funds shortly for developing the infrastructure in each new district headquarters. They said it may take another two to three years for the Government to complete the project provided the centre also released some additional funds.
