NC-CONG HONEYMOON ON THE ROCKS
8/4/2006 7:06:11 PM
Jammu, August 4:-Chief Minister, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad’s idea of forging an alliance with the National Conference, in case the coalition with the PDP suffered cracks, is said to have been aborted by the UPA Chairperson and AICC President,Ms Sonia Gandhi.
Informed sources said that soon after Ms Gandhi received reports that Mr Azad was trying to keep the National Conference leadership in good humour in order to upset the PDP applecart aiming at pulling out of the coalition which could result in the fall of the Azad led Government, the AICC President is said to have advised the Chief Minister to carry the PDP leadership with him so that the coalition rule lasted for the full term.
The sources said that both Mufti Mohd.Sayeed and his daughter, Ms Mehbooba Mufti, PDP Chief, had complained to the Congress high command that Mr Azad was not taking “our party leaders in confidence” which had gladdened the hearts of National Conference leaders. Following this complaint Ms Gandhi is said to have discussed the matter with her trusted people in the AICC who also suggested to her that the present political arrangement in Jammu and Kashmir should not be disturbed.
The PDP leadership is stated to have brought to the notice of Ms Gandhi the adverse impact not only on the PDP structure but on the state unit of the Congress of the inordinate delay on the part of the Chief Minister in expanding his 13-member council of ministers. In fact the leadership of both the congress and the PDP is under tremendous pressure from their party legislators for increasing the size of the ministry.
Number of congress legislators said that “our party has been on the receiving end because people have found it difficult to get redressal of their grievances and difficulties when the Chief Minister held as many as six important portofolios including health and education.”They said that when Mufti Mohd.Sayeed was the Chief Minister the allocation of portfolios among 39 ministers had facilitated common people in meeting them for getting justice done to their cases.
A couple of PDP leaders said that after Mr Azad took over as Chief Minister most of the administrative setup and staructure remained in his hands with the result even ministers, not to speak of legislators, had been reduced to nonentities.
Informed sources said that after Ms Gandhi’s suggestions to Mr Azad the Chief Minister has decided to expand the council of ministers and take PDP leadership into confidence while taking important decisions. And the National Conference leadership has become aware of Ms Gandhi’s advice to Mr Azad and hence the main opposition party has started fulminating against the coalition Government inside and outside the Assembly. It was doing so after its dream of seeing PDP out of the ruling coalition could not materialize.
